The Full Scale IQ of 91 (27th percentile, 95% CI 86–97) fell in the Average range. Because the index scores varied by more than a typical amount, the FSIQ should be interpreted with caution and the individual indexes are described separately.

Verbal comprehension was a relative strength. The Verbal Comprehension Index of 104 (61st percentile) fell in the Average range, indicating age-appropriate acquired knowledge and verbal reasoning. Visual spatial reasoning was a relative weakness: the Visual Spatial Index of 84 (14th percentile, 95% CI 78–92) fell in the Low Average range, indicating that tasks requiring the analysis of visual detail and spatial relationships were more difficult for the student than for most same-age peers.

Reading skills fell in the Low Average range overall (Broad Reading SS 88, 21st percentile). Word recognition was age-appropriate, while reading comprehension (Passage Comprehension SS 83, 13th percentile) and fluency were weaker, a pattern in which the student can decode words accurately but has difficulty holding the meaning of connected text — consistent with the working memory weakness described above. Summary and Eligibility Considerations

Academic achievement in reading comprehension, reading fluency, and written language fell below the level expected given the student's cognitive ability, while word recognition and mathematics were age-appropriate.

This pattern — an Average-range cognitive profile, a processing weakness in memory and attention that is corroborated across instruments, informants, and time, and achievement deficits in the areas most dependent on that process — is consistent with the criteria for Specific Learning Disability under 5 CCR § 3030(b)(10). The team should consider these findings together with classroom performance, response to intervention, and the exclusionary factors, which are addressed in the sections that follow.

Recommendations

The following recommendations are generated from the student's specific scores and the eligibility considered above. Each one names the finding that produced it.

Working memory (WMI 79, Very Low; WRAML-3 Attention/Concentration 72)

1. Present multi-step directions one step at a time and provide a written or visual copy the student can refer back to. 2. Check for understanding by having the student restate directions before beginning independent work. 3. Reduce the memory load of tasks that are not assessing memory — provide formula sheets, word banks, and worked examples. 4. Preferential seating near the point of instruction to limit competing input.

Reading comprehension and fluency (Passage Comprehension 83; Sentence Reading Fluency 86)

5. Explicit instruction in comprehension strategies that externalize memory — annotating, chunking passages, and summarizing after each section. 6. Extended time (time-and-a-half) on reading-heavy assessments, consistent with the processing weakness documented above. 7. Access to audio versions of grade-level texts so comprehension can be assessed separately from decoding fluency.

Written language (Broad Written Language 81; Spelling 77)

8. Word-prediction and spell-check software for all written assignments, with spelling not penalized on content-area work. 9. Graphic organizers for planning written work, so the student's Average-range verbal reasoning (VCI 104) can be brought to the page without the working-memory bottleneck.

Self-concept (PH-3 Total 38; Happiness and Satisfaction 31)

10. Consultation with the school counselor regarding the student's low self-reported happiness and satisfaction, with a check-in schedule agreed at the IEP meeting. 11. Structure opportunities for the student to demonstrate the verbal and mathematical strengths documented above in front of peers.

Not recommended: no recommendation is generated for Fluid Reasoning (97) or Mathematics (96), which fell in the Average range — AUTOMATA does not pad a report with recommendations the scores do not support.
